Gear

New & notable gear

What’s worth a look this fall, with Salomon’s newest trail shoes alongside a few other standouts and independent reviews.

Salomon S/LAB Genesis 2

$200
Technical trail · fast descents

An aggressive, nimble trail shoe with a 6 mm drop, 25/31 mm stack and 4.5 mm lugs. Trail Runner called it “a full-send evolution” of the original, with a firmer, more precise ride and a secure fit, especially for narrower forefeet. Not the pick if you want plush cushioning.

Hoka Tecton X 4

$275
Trail racing · ultra distance

Carbon plates, a knit ankle gaiter and Vibram Megagrip at 9.3 oz. iRunFar calls it “one of the best trail and ultra racing shoes currently available.” Drawbacks are the price, a gaiter that can bother high insteps, and less ground feel.

Salomon Ultra Glide 4

about $160
Max-cushion trail · ultra distance

A well-cushioned, stable trail shoe with a 41/35 mm stack, suited to long days, ultra racing and hiking. Doctors of Running rates it A-/A for versatility and value, with the caveats of low midfoot volume and some slipping on wet rock.
